  • Who is the bird in your hand? Are you attracting your ideal clients?

Why concentrate your efforts, products and services on attracting an ideal client? Well, the quick answer is, life is short and is best spent working with those you love and enjoy.

What is that you say? You are the practical kind, and take any client because you have bills to deal with. You have grown accustomed to eating and paying your mortgage so an ideal client is one who pays their bill. I would challenge you to expand your concept of an ideal client to better serve yourself and your clients.

To illustrate attracting an ideal client, let me use an analogy from nature. I am an avid birdwatcher. When I started I put out a generic seed mix and one feeder. Sadly I had no takers and for a long time I wondered why I had no birds taking advantage of my lovely feeder!

Next I educated myself on the needs of the birds I wanted to attract. I realize now that the birds were mostly turned off because I had no shrubs or trees to shelter them while they fed. Over the next few years I built up the shrubs and cover in my yard and attracted loads of birds. What fun! Sort of.

I admit to a prejudice against some types like grackles and starlings that are not my ideal bird! They are not pretty, they came in swarms, cleaned out my feeders and intimidated the pretty songbirds I did want to attract.

I returned to my information resources to research what my ideal birds liked. Did you know there is a special feeder designed for the American Goldfinch? There is even a feeder designed specifically for the majestic Pileated woodpecker.

The results? When I adapted my feeders (substitute your products and your services here) I attracted the specific birds I wanted to attract. I saw the results I wanted by adapting my offerings to meet the specific needs of my ideal birds.

The advantages to my birds should be obvious. They are sheltered and well fed. What about the advantages to me as the provider -whether of birdseed or of professional services? When I research, select and narrow down my ideal client, all sorts of aspects of my business become easier.

For instance I am no longer using the shotgun approach of putting out one product and hoping to attract who ever passes by (or flies by!). I have become an expert as far as the birds, my clients, are concerned. They select my yard time and again because I know what they need and I provide it. I have even gone beyond their basic needs and now cater to their preferences! Of course they select my yard!

  • Do you know who you are trying to attract?
  • Are you baffled because your services do not attract who you want, or attract no one at all?
  • Have you made yourself stand out in your field by becoming an expert in the needs and desires of your clients?
  • Does your marketing offer the specific product your ideal client wants?
  • I will speak to these and similar topics in upcoming issues of this e-zine Give and Take. My goal is to share my successful experience growing my business and generate thoughts and ideas in your mind as to how you can best thrive in your business.

I invite you to join me each month for an insightful and fun discussion of theses topics. And of course, please feel free to forward my e-zine to friends and colleagues you feel may benefit.

    Till next time,
    Blessings & Light
